Yes of course you can!
They are part of the family and we love dogs at Cotswold Canoe Hire. Getting on the river with your four leggar is a great way for them to join in with your fun.
Here are our handy tips:
- Get them used to the water first– It may seem obvious but get them used to the water before you bring them on to one of our craft for the first time. Pick a shallow spot and let them get their paws wet and encourage them to swim with a stick or toy. This will give them confidence. Even if your dog is a good swimmer, you may want to consider a well fitted dog buoyancy aid or sturdy harness with a lifting handle. The fit and handle are important if you need to lift your dog back into the boat if they get into difficulties. Never tie your dog’s lead on to the craft with them still attached!
- Pack treats and water– Be prepared and pack a bag of treats to eat and toys to play with, including floating tennis balls, or a frisbee.
- Nailed it! – If your furry friend hasn’t had their claws clipped, ensure you have sturdy bags for your kit so your dog can’t damage it. If your using our dry bags, they can double up as a dog bed!
- Pick it up & Bag it up!– A good supply of poo bags is an essential part of any four legged adventure, plus a dedicated ‘storage’ box like an old Tupperware Please don’t leave the bags on the river banks . Also be aware of the environment you are in and be careful of other wildlife. Dogs love to play and chase, so use a lead if you think your dog might be feeling frisky!
- Paws for thought– hard to believe, but not everyone loves your dog as much as you. Respect the environment and other river users.
