Dive into Watersports Without Getting Drenched!

Conquering Your Fears: A Beginners Guide

So, you’re curious about watersports but the idea of venturing onto the open water makes your palms sweaty and your heart do the Macarena? Been there, totally get it. The vast expanse of a lake, ocean or even the river can seem intimidating, especially for beginners. But fear not, there’s a whole world of amazing watersports waiting for you – and most of them happen in the calm, controlled comfort of inland waters of lakes and rivers. That’s where we come in! The upper stretch of the River Thames is perfect to start your journey in paddlesports.

Choosing Your Adventure:

First things first, not all watersports are created equal. Here are a few inland options to consider, and we provide them all!:

  • Kayaking: This classic is perfect for beginners. You’re nice and low to the water, and our kayaks are super stable (unlike your fear of the deep!). Explore the hidden gems of the Thames, paddle with family or test friendships in our doubles, or just enjoy a peaceful solo cruise with your partner.
  • Paddleboarding: Stand tall (or take a knee, no judgment!) and conquer the gentle ebb and flow of a lake or calm river. It’s surprisingly easy to learn and offers a fantastic core workout (hello, hidden six-pack!). Great for balance.
  • Canoeing: Grab a partner or your family and paddle along at your own pace. Canoeing is a great way to relax, enjoy the wonderful nature and ecology of the river, and maybe even have a picnic on en-route. Wind in the Willows anyone?
  • Rowing Boats: Calling all traditionalists! Rowing offers a fun, low-impact way to explore the water. Get a little exercise, enjoy some fun with friends or family, or take a picnic for a little romance.
  • Pedalos: Our Swans & Pink Flamingos are pure fun for the whole family. Hop on, pedal around, and enjoy the silly side of watersports. Just be prepared for some playful splashing and maybe a minor battle for steering supremacy. Navigating out of our dock is a test!

Conquering the fear:

Okay, so you’ve picked from above, but those pre-watersport jitters are still doing the tango in your stomach. Here’s how to silence them:

  • Start Small: Don’t jump straight into a raging rapid. Begin on a calm lake or a sheltered section of a river. Baby steps, my friend! Our spot at Lechlade is perfect.
  • Befriend a Buoyancy Aid: Life jackets aren’t just for wimps! They’ll give you peace of mind and keep you afloat if you take a tumble (which, hey, is part of the fun sometimes!). All our hires include life jackets for children and Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s) for adults. Don’t wear one…don’t get on!
  • Buddy Up: There’s something comforting about having a friend by your side, especially if they’re a seasoned watersports pro. They can offer pointers and moral support (and maybe even help you fish out your dropped phone). Never paddle alone if you are a beginner.

The Wet and Wonderful World Awaits!

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun! Watersports are a fantastic way to get some exercise, soak up the sun, clear the mind and create epic memories (think wipeouts and even more laughs). So, ditch your fear, grab your swimsuit, and get ready to experience the joy of watersports on the river with us!

We guarantee you’ll be leaving land and loving it!
